For generations, dogs have been an integral part of the British Royal Family, and they've been beloved companions of the monarchs and their families.

As King Charles prepares for his coronation, it will be a new breed to take their place at Buckingham Palace. King Charles is a fan of Jack Russells, these little dogs have been a constant presence in his life since childhood.

In fact, his first Flag Russell, Tigga, was a gift from his grandmother, the Queen Mother. King Charles has since owned several Jack Russells, and they have been his faithful companions through thick and thin. He even brought one of his beloved dogs, Rufus, to the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, where the little pup stole the show.

His wife, the Queen Consort Camilla, is also a lover of Jack Russells and an avid dog lover in general. Her two rescue dogs, both Jack Russells, are called Beth and Bluebell, and are her constant companions. In fact, she's been known to sneak them into official events, much to the delight of fellow dog lovers.

Camilla has said that her dogs help keep her grounded and that she couldn't imagine life without them. It’s no wonder, then, that this approach resonates so widely with the British public - one of the most dog-loving nations in the world!

What can you do to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles, and involve your pets?

There are plenty of ways that the British public can involve their precious pets in the celebrations.

One idea might be to organise a dog-friendly street party or parade in honour of the coronation. This could involve dressing up your dogs in patriotic attire, such as Union Flag bandanas or crowns, and walking them around your neighbourhood to show your support.

Another option might be to organise a dog show or competition with a coronation theme. This could involve categories such as “Best Dressed Dog" or "Most Patriotic Pooch" with prizes awarded for the winners. You could also organise games and activities for the dogs, such as obstacle courses or treasure hunts.

Whatever you choose to do to celebrate the coronation of King Charles, it's important to keep your pet’s safety and well-being in mind.

Make sure they are comfortable and well-fed, have enough fresh water and access to shade, and always clean up after them to keep public spaces clean and hygienic.

Tips to keep your dog safe and happy during Coronation celebrations

Food safety

There are quite a few food items that are unsafe or poisonous to pets, so ensure that these are kept well out of their reach, especially if you’ve set up outside tables, or picnics.

The following items are poisonous or potentially dangerous to dogs:

  • Alcohol
  • Chocolate
  • Grapes, raisins and sultanas
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Corn on the cob
  • Onions, garlic and chives
  • Avocado
  • Artificial sweeteners (Xylitol)
  • Cooked bones

For cats, be sure to keep the following foods away to keep them safe:

  • Garlic or onion-based foods
  • Raw meats, eggs and bones
  • Chocolate
  • Alcohol
  • Grapes & raisins
  • Protecting them from too many people

It’s likely to be a busy weekend, with more people and their pets out and about. Stay aware of your pet’s reaction to the environment, keep them on a lead if required, put a muzzle on them if necessary and give them some time away from busy places and crowds if needed.

Firework safety

There could be fireworks at various points over the weekend. If you’re considering using them, perhaps consider using silent options that are just as spectacular from a visual point of view, but don’t cause as much the potentially distressing noise as regular fireworks.

You can keep your pet safe and comfortable in the event of there being loud fireworks by using pet calming products, playing background music, keeping them indoors, and staying in with them to ease the stress.

With a little creativity and planning, you can involve your pet in the celebrations to make the coronation a truly memorable occasion for everyone involved.
